Mid-year recess is just a week away. A whole week of no homework, no tests, no due dates…awesome. But now that it’s so close, what can we actually do over break? Here are some fun ideas for those who don’t plan on watching TV or sleeping the whole time.

1) Movie Marathon: All you need are your best friends, favorite movies, and tasty snacks. Try making something besides boring, traditional popcorn. What about berry-orange sorbet or chocolate-dipped pretzels? These treats are fun and easy to make, and they taste great!

2) Hang out with Friends: Of course, this is an obvious thing to do over break. But how about inviting someone different this time, like that friendly guy/girl in your class? Invite a nice school friend over and do something fun together. (Baking/decorating cupcakes, skateboarding, hanging out at the mall)

3) Crafts: If you’re creative and artsy, then try an awesome arts and crafts project. Some cool suggestions: Dress up your converse with animal print and doodles, or create a movie t-shirt.

So, whatever you choose to do over break, make sure it’s interesting and entertaining. Have fun!

Just 2 weeks ago, you had no idea who Jeremy Lin was. Now he has turned New York upside down. As the first American player of Taiwanese descent, Jeremy is the best Asian player yet. He grew up in Palo Alto, California after his parents, both of Taiwanese descent immigrated to the US. He is currently a professional player in the New York Knicks of the NBA. Before this success, the Harvard graduate guaranteed contract deal with his hometown Golden State Warriors. Unfortunately, he was to clear payroll. He was also rejected by Houston Rockets. You would think it is ironic for Lin to attend Harvard and accomplish success in the New York Knicks. He was very smart on academic, even if he wanted to play basketball too. His dream college was Stanford, but Harvard wanted Lin to increase the spotlight of an Asian basketball player. Jeremy told the world to believe in yourself when no one does and seize the opportunity when it comes.

A video has been recently posted on Youtube of a Wooly Mammoth crossing a river at the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia. The wooly mammoth is a colossal brown furred elephant like animal with two long curved tusks who lived during the ice age. Scientists think it became extinct thousands of years ago at 165o B.C. but it could still be alive according to the video. The video is extremely blurry and lasts only about 10 seconds making it very suspicious. Many people think the video is just a hoax since the filmer could of easily just inserted a computer made mammoth on to the screen or filmed a bear with a fish in a mouth. The video was posted by Michael Cohen who has posted other suspicious videos of UFOs and other things that are thought to not exist. It turns out that the video is fake and wooly mammoths are extinct, not alive. The maker of the video apparently got a real river scene and used Photoshop to add a mammoth to the video. Lou Petho, the person who captured the river scene commented on a post that he had filmed the river and there was actually no wooly mammoth.

“Peeta Mellark and Primrose Everdeen!” Have you heard this phrase before? Yup, that’s right! The Hunger Games! When Katniss Everdeen volunteers to substitue her sister in the Hunger Games, her life turns around. She travels to the Capitol, where boys and girls from different districts are put against each other in a fight to the death. Miraculously, Katniss and Peeta both win. Of course, things never work out. In Catching Fire, Katniss and Peeta are taken back to the fighting arena. They make new friends and escape from the arena. In Mockingjay, Katniss and Peeta join a force that is the remains of the dead District 13. They lead a rebellion, but I don’t want to ruin the book for you. You can find out the rest in any library. This is a great series from book 1, The Hunger Games, to book 3, Mockingjay. Get buried in this wonderful series now!

Plastic bags are being banned and if they are, it would create a cleaner environment and would save wildlife, wouldn’t litter, clog drainage system,or pollute local streams. As the new policy goes into effect, passed by the San Jose City Council in December 2011and by the Santa Clara County Board Of Supervisors in April, only restaurants, nonprofits and social organizations can hand out the bags.

<del></del> Opponents have said that the ordinance will hurt consumers and small businesses because they don’t have the same buying power as the bigger stores. For this, the San Jose ordinance, proposed four years ago by San Jose Councilman Kansen Chu, permits retailers to provide single-use paper bags that contain a minimum of 40 percent recycled content. Except, they must charge shoppers a fee of 10 cents per bag, which would be increased to 25 cents in two years. And, there would be exceptions for retailers that provide plastic or paper bags for meat and bulky produce.

Now, some stores are helping out. Safeway, for instance, plans to give away one free reusable bag per customer while supplies last at San Jose stores.

America is the second largest democracy in the world. Democracy allows every individual to have his or her own voice in the government. In fact, the government is by the people, to the people, and for the people. The U.S. Constitution asks us to hold a presidential election every four years. This year is an election year and President Obama will be seeking reelection. He will campaign against the Republican nominee. In my previous articles, we have discussed about the Republican candidates and now we are going to discuss about the Democratic candidate for the White House.

President Obama is the first black president in the U.S. He is a Harvard graduate and Nobel Peace Prize winner. During his presidency, he has eliminated many Al-Qaeda leaders such as Osama Bin-Laden, created an unpopular health-care bill, and jump started the economy again. The economy is recovering, but very slowly. During this year’s State of the Union, Obama outlined his policies for restoring the American dream. President Obama plans to invest huge amounts of money in the infrastructure, manufacturing, auto, and tourism industry. He has already given many loans to the auto companies in the last three years. Thanks to him, General Motors is the number one car provider in the world. The banks also received stimulus form his administration. Many Americans think the President spent too much money on the unreliable and unstable banks. They feel that he wasted money that should have been used on middle-class citizens. Republicans blame him for the U.S. Debt Crisis. This makes people wonder if Obama will be capable of spending money in a wiser way in order to reduce the deficit.

On the issue of energy, he wants to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by thirty- five percent and he is a huge supporter of plug-in hybrids. Obama gave a five- hundred million dollar loan to a company named Solyndra that makes solar panels and later the company went bankrupt. Many Americans are angry at Obama’s outrageous spending. Again and again, Obama seems to lavishly fund unstable companies. A lot of the people near the Gulf of Mexico disapprove the Obama administration’s handling of the BP oil spill. The administration didn’t react very fast to the spill. By the time they took action, many animals died, the oil reached the shores, and families, engaged in fish trade, lost their businesses.

Obama’s policies on the economy might not be that popular, but his foreign policy is creditable. Obama has been very successful at eliminating terrorism around the world, and ending wars. Obama is well-known for eliminating Osama Bin-Laden. Obama culminated the eleven-year search for this top Al-Qaeda leader through a risky Navy Seal mission. He has also killed many Somalian pirates and saved many Americans. Last year, Obama ended the Iraq war and if he gets reelected he plans to end the Afghanistan war too. During the Arab Springs, Obama helped establish a no-fly zone in Libya. To stop Iran from creating more and more nuclear weapons, he promises to isolate Iran through sanctions. Many people like Obama’s foreign policy because it focuses on ending wars. This way lives will not be lost, troops can come back home, and the government will stop wasting money on the military and spend it on useful things such as education, research, and general welfare.

Four years ago, President Obama became the first black president and he promised to restore the American Dream. At the time of his inauguration, the economy was stagnating and there seemed to be no solution for fixing the country. Till now, he has not been able to fulfill his promise. The unemployment rate is at 8.6% and forty-two million Americans face poverty everyday. But Obama is getting close to reviving the country. The unemployment rate has been dropping consistently and he has put a stop to the Iraq war. What can Obama do to restore not just the dream, but to make it a reality? He is a young, ambitious president with the vision for making America great. Perhaps he needs another four years.

The flocks of sheep in Auckland’s SheepWorld are not normal muddy white colored. The flock of 60 sheep is not born with a pink coat, because the farm owners decide to give their sheep pink hairdos with food coloring to attract more visitors to the farm to provide an insight about sheep farming. The pink sheep are living in New Zeland in a vast prairie. The owners had dyed their sheep pink, but since it was attracting more and more visitors, the owners kept the colors permanent. This idea originated 2 years ago, when the farm owners dyed their sheep black and red to celebrate rugby finals in New Zealand. This became so popular that the farm owners made much more profit with the new visitors. Dyeing them many different colors were difficult, so the farm decides to settle on hot pink in the support for breast cancer awareness. But there will be a problem about the amount of rainfall in Auckland since the color tend to wash off. Food coloring is harmless to these sheep, and the color will not bother the sheep, they are colorblind!

Nuclear reactors in the U.S? I thought that was impossible! Ever since the three-mile incident, nobody wanted anything to do with the nuclear reactors. At least, until this year. A bunch of proposed plans for nuclear reactors suddenly started popping up all over the U.S. But none of them were able to get past the licenses. But now, a new nuclear plant called the AP 1000 has been approved and will be built. Cool, huh? Think again. This new plant could cause a whole lot of more trouble. There are many reasons, but here’s the most important one. The United States has lost its skill in the reactor field. True, we do build some reactors here and there. But it has been a long time since we have built a nuclear reactor. And plus, we need more plutonium and money to build this thing, so we might just give up this operation. But if it succeeds, it will produce more pros than cons. Hopefully, we will be able to bring this thing together and get it fully functional.
