Anonymous is an active group of hacker activists (hacktivists), who has three main beliefs listed on their website: Don’t do it to someone else if you don’t want it to be done to you, Information is free, and We own this. Forever. Recently Anonymous has been acting in retaliation against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA). The hacktivists in Anonymous rallied other hackers together, and working together, took down six prominent websites that include the US Justice Department’s, the Universal Music Group’s, the Motion Picture Association of America’s, and the Recording Industry Association of America’s.
After Thursday January 19, 2012, when the FBI shut down Megaupload.com and all sites affiliated, such as Megavideo, according to Fox News, “The government takes down Megaupload? 15 minutes later Anonymous takes down government & record label sites. Megaupload was taken down w/out SOPA being law. Now imagine what will happen if it passes. The Internet as we know it will end. FIGHT BACK,” the group added, in a reference to the ongoing battle in Congress over the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). After some of the government sites came back up, on Monday January 23, Anonymous, on a rampage, took over Senator Chuck Grassley’s twitter account and shut down CBS’s website. According to Reuters, Anonymous posted on the ,senator’s twitter account,“Dear Iowans, vote against ACTA, SOPA, and PIPA, because this man, Chuck Grassley, wants YOUR internet censored and all of that BS,” the hacker wrote.
What’s your opinion? Is Anonymous right in not censoring the web by attacking websites? Or is it wrong to hack major websites?
